Simon Woods is the founder and CEO of SimSoft, which makes the popular Sims series for the Nintendo 3DS.
He told Eurogamer that the Sims series had always been about community building, and that in its current state, the game had never been more popular.
“The Sims is a franchise that we have been working on for 20 years and have been able to achieve some great milestones in terms of making the franchise bigger and better and more popular than ever,” he said.
“There are no limits on how far we can go in terms the game we’re making.
There’s never been anything that we’ve put out that’s just for fun.
We’re just happy that we can make a game that people want to play.”
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz in December 2015, Woods discussed the success of the game and what he sees to come for the franchise.
“I think there’s an opportunity for us to continue with that.
We’ve never had the ability to be very ambitious with the core gameplay and we’ve always had the opportunity to do that,” he explained.”
We’ve had some really good moments.
It’s not all doom and gloom, but it is something that we want to do and we think there are really great opportunities there for us.”
SimSoft, like many other publishers, have been trying to make The Sims a success over the last few years.
SimSoft’s first-party games have seen the likes of The Sims: Pets, The Walking Dead, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt all released on the Nintendo DS and Xbox 360.
But the company has since seen some issues with the Nintendo Switch console and it is expected to be one of the major reasons why the console does not get as many downloads as it should.
We didn’t have a huge amount of support, but we’ve had a great deal of support from Nintendo and I think the support from Microsoft and Sony will come as a welcome change to what has been an uphill battle.””
We haven’t been able for the last couple of years to do this.
We didn’t have a huge amount of support, but we’ve had a great deal of support from Nintendo and I think the support from Microsoft and Sony will come as a welcome change to what has been an uphill battle.”
As part of its ongoing efforts to make the game more accessible to new players, Sims 5 will be updated with a number of new features, including the ability for Sims to have a ‘friend list’ which lets them find other Sims.
Woods said the Sims 5 team would be looking at adding new features to the game in the coming weeks.
“If there’s something we’re looking at we’ll be sure to let you know,” he added.
“As far as the features that we’re going to be looking to do, there are some new features that you can look forward to in the next few weeks that are something that will be really cool to see.”
Woods has been a long-time supporter of Nintendo, but says he is not worried about how long Nintendo has been able in keeping its console alive.
Speaking to Eurogamer earlier this year, Woods said Nintendo had “a really good track record of staying on top of what’s going on”.
“I have great faith in Nintendo.
They’re a company that’s always been very committed to making games,” he concluded.
“And, again, I think there’ll be a lot of excitement around it, a lot more people playing it, and it’s going to go on and continue to grow.”
