New research is showing that pressure treated lumber can be an ideal material for making furniture out of, according to a team of researchers from the University of North Carolina and the University at Buffalo.
The research team found that pressure-treated wood can have significant potential as a replacement for concrete, as well as for structural materials.
The findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
“This is really a new field and a new material, and I think it’s exciting because of the opportunity it presents,” said study co-author Michael C. Lappin, a doctoral student at the UNC School of Arts and Sciences.
“There’s a lot of potential there.
It’s a pretty easy material to make a product out of and it’s also fairly easy to treat, so you can make something really simple, inexpensive, and portable.”
The researchers say they believe pressure treated timber can be a very versatile material that can be utilized in many ways, including as a structural wood.
“There are so many different applications where pressure treated materials can be good, but they also have uses for other materials,” said Lappins graduate student Andrew A. McFarland, who was the study’s lead author.
“It’s a very attractive alternative to concrete, for example.
It could be used for roofs, for doors and windows, for windows, and for doors.”
Lappin and McFarlands work on a project called the Wooden Floor, which is focused on making new materials out of pressure-treated wood.
Pressure-treated lumber is a type of wood that has been treated with a chemical that prevents it from absorbing water and creating moisture.
It also contains no natural gas.
It is a natural ingredient for making durable, lightweight structures that can support human beings.
“We’ve found a lot that is really novel about pressure treated products,” said McFarlings co-director, Jennifer E. Brown, who has been working on the project since 2013.
“We know it can be really good for structural wood, for window and door frame, for door frame for interior doors.
We’ve found this is really an important material for building products, for the environment, and there’s so much that can go wrong if you don’t make it right.”
Lampwood is one of the most commonly used wood types, but pressure treated woods are not a very common one, according, according Brown.
“It’s really hard to find a lot, because you have to buy them on a shelf, you have them shipped to you,” Brown said.
“But we found pressure treated logs were readily available in our area.
They’re a really cheap material.
They come from very far away, and they’re a very fast drying material.
So they can be made into furniture.”
The research group has already developed two different pressure treated wooden products: one made from a pressure-finished wood, and one made of a natural product.
In addition to using pressure treated material for furniture, pressure treatedwood can be incorporated into other applications.
“When you take a pressure treated product and put it on top of something like a building, you get a new effect,” Lappinis said.
Lappins team is currently working on a third pressure treated, natural product that they hope to start producing in the next year or two.
“What we want to do is to start to put pressure treated pieces in the roofing industry.
We want to get into building materials for the interior of homes, as we’re seeing more and more people starting to get rid of their old homes.
We also want to work on new products to use pressure treated furniture as structural materials,” McFarld said.
In addition to Lappinas work, Brown is the senior author of a paper published in this month’s issue of the journal Science Advances, and McAlnaughan is the co-first author of the paper.
“These papers provide a really good roadmap for future research,” Brown added.
